Course Description

Brief review of classical mechanics: Lagrange and Hamilton formalism. Formal structure of quantum mechanics: states, operators, representations, and the Dirac notation. Harmonic oscillator: operator algebra, states. Quantum mechanics in three-dimensions: central potentials and the radial equation, bound and scattering states. Angular momentum: operators, algebra of commutators, eigenvalues and eigenstates, spherical harmonics. Spin: Stern-Gerlach devices and measurements, spin. Addition of angular momentum: Clebsch-Gordan series and coefficients. Hydrogen atoms.
